St. John's G.A.A. Club weekly notes -

Opening defeat for club’s U-16’s

St. John’s U-16 football team suffered a heavy defeat at home to Ballymote/Round Towers. Things didn’t go well right at the start with St. John’s only managing 12 players to take to the field. Worse was to follow for Ger Egan & Stephen Cronin’s charges with Daragh Fleming forced off after just 5 minutes with a knee injury.  Ballymote’s numerical  advantage  with two extra players was too much for the St. John’s team to overcome and the Ballymote side ran out comfortable winners in the end by 4-16 to St. John’s 1-1.
Best for St. John’s on the day were Joe Spratt in defence, Adam Grace midfield and Scott McGarry who accounted for St. John’s entire tally of 1-1.

Next up for the U-16’s is an away fixture against Calry/St. Joseph’s in Hazelwood’s new pitch on Sunday at 11.30 a.m.

Summerhill’s 30-year wait continues
Summerhill College long overdue wait for an Connacht senior title continues following their agonizing one point defeat at the hands of Roscommon of C.B.S in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday.  Both sides met earlier in the league final with the Sligo schools side coming out  on top by a 10 point margain.   Richard Hughes & Noel Gately were the scoring heroes for Roscommon C.B.S. who were appearing in their first final since 1988.  Both sides went into the interval level all square at 0-4 each.   Gately edged Roscommon in front. Summerhill  rallied through scrores from Kyle Cawley and Captain Darragh Cummins to leave the minimum in it.  Gately’s late point was enough to seal a narrow victory while Summerhill was left to rue a number of missed chances that was to prove costly in the end.

St. John’s were well represented on the Summerhill team with players of the quality of Paul McNamara, Alex Selby, Brian McGowan, Cathal Jordan, Conor McGovern, Cian Hough, Emmett Flanagan and Evan Tuffy all contributing to the Sligo Schools surge to the Connacht final.
