St. John's players impress for Sligo hurlers

Sligo hurlers edge past Cavan in a cliffhanger

With all the attention drawn to the County’s Minor & Senior footballers contesting Connacht finals on Sunday 19th July the County’s U-21 hurlers have reached the All-Ireland Championships semi-finals all under the radar. Unknown to many of us the team are backboned by a number of talented club players most notably Darren McNeilis at full-back, Eoin Davey, Cathal Jordan Fr. Manning Cup medial winner in 2014 and current County senior player Mattew Davey who also captained the team.

The match was played before last Saturday’s All-Ireland football qualifier with Roscommon & Cavan in Breffni Kingspan Park. Trailing by seven points at half time the Sligo lads displayed great courage to come back from that deficit and forced the game into extra time. At the end of a nail biting contest Sligo did just enough to win by a point and earned their semi-final placing in a hard fought but enjoyable contest.

The All-Ireland semi-final will take place in Letterkenny on Saturday July 18th v Donegal
