Championships resume

The Championships resume this weekend after a lengthy break owing Sligo’s extended run in this year’s All-Ireland senior football championships.

The minors take to the field first on Thursday evening where they face the Tubbercurry/Cloonacool selection. The Minor B league champions lost out in the previous round to St. Mary’s. Fergal Henry and his charges will be eager to return to winning ways and keep their hopes of a league and cup double alive.

On Friday the club’s young starts will be in action against St. Patrick’s in Stenson Park in the U-14B championship.

Then on Saturday evening the club’s seniors take on Tourlestrane in the sea side club of Enniscrone. Tourlestrane have two wins out of two while St. John’ s are badly seeking a moral boosting win having lost to Tubbercurry & St. Mary’s respectively in the opening two rounds. The recent good win over Coolera/Strandhill  and a determined showing in the narrow loss to Saturday’s opponents in the league has focussed the mind on the bigger picture. The welcome return of county star Charlie Harrison to club action and the momentum built up in the league will hopefully breath new life to the St. John’s team that have yet to sparkle.  A win on Saturday will put the team right back in contention for a major push in the weeks ahead.

Finally on Sunday evening the Intermediate team have the short journey to Markievicz Park to play Enniscrone. The Intermediates too are seeking their first win in the championship having suffered losses to Castleconnor & Cloonacool in the opening rounds. The Intermediate management of Niall Gordon & Ray Henry will be hoping for an improved performance and barring injury’s, holidays should have a full squad to choose from.

With plenty of action this weekend involving club teams your support will be appreciated. Come out and support the sky blues. Nothing beats being there.................

St. Johns are too hot for Cloonacool

St. Johns are too hot for Cloonacool

Our Division 2 team had a well merited victory over Cloonacool on Sunday on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-7. The first half was well contested with both sides finding it difficult to register scores. St. John’s lead at half time by 0-6 to 0-3.
The team worked hard in the second half to run easy winners in the end. A well worked goal from Fiachra Grennan early in the second half and a wonder goal by Andrew Kerr were the pick of the scores. Our last game is against Easkey in Stenson Park.
The Minors are playing St. Mary’s at home on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Lotto results for the last draw which was on 13/7/2014. No jackpot winner for €7650. €25 euro winners were Ann Quinn c/o Willie Grady, Tony Hansbury Carraroe, Mary Finan Cairns Hill & Terry Gordon Carraroe.

The next draw takes place in the Crozon Inn on August 2nd.

Comprehensive win for St. John's

Big win for St. John’s

St. John’s 6-9 Coolera/Strandhill 0-5

Our Senior team had a comprehensive win on Sun against a depleted Coolera /Strandhill team in Ransboro on a scoreline of 6-9 to 0-5. St Johns with a strong midfield partnership of Oisin Cox and Shane Stenson dominated the first 20 min and the forwards took full advantage with a plentiful supply of good ball. Thomas Kelly, Ross Gordon and Fiacra Grennan all helped themselves to goals while Ian Rossiter bagged 2 goals one a delightful chip to the top corner of the net.

The game was more evenly contested in the second half but the St John’s defence were well on top throughout so there was no way back for the opposition. Enda Roche , Eoin Flanagan and Neal Hayes dominated this sector as the game reached its conclusion.

Team and scorers: Mark Rooney, Eoin Flanagan, Neal Hayes, Conor Clerkin, Connor Greene, Paul McNamara, Phelim Murphy, Enda Roche, Oisin Cox, Shane Stenson 0-2, Thomas Kelly 1-3, Philip Greene, Ross Gordon 1-1, Ian Rossiter 2-2, Fiacra Grennan 1-0, Subs Brian McGowan, James Murphy 1-0, Gerard Fagan, James Noonan.

Bag Packing: This weekend we are bag packing in Dunnes Stores on thurs, Fri, and Sat and players are asked to contact Noel Hynes to help fill the allocated slots.

St.John's U-10 Blitz

St Johns GAA club under 10's completed their final blitz before the summer break at Markievicz Park on Saturday morning. It's been a great start to the season with 25 children taking part in the group. We fielded two teams in each series of games and the performances improved immensely helped in
no small way by all who helped out with the Monday night coaching.

The club decided this year to base their underage structure in Cleveragh and this has proved a great success. It's been great to see the crowds of children each Monday and Wednesday night watched by the many parents, a great spectacle for all to see.

Many thanks to all who helped out in any way, to the parents for the commitment they have shown and to all the children who have taken part.

We break for a few weeks for holidays. In conjunction with our sponsors Flanagan Cycles we are running a pre- City League training camp running from Monday August 18th to Friday August 22nd each day from 10.00am to 2.00pm. This is in preparation for the City Leagues which commence in
September. We will be releasing more details soon in relation to the camp and would urge all  Parents to send the children to the camp.
