St. John's G.A.A. Club weekly notes

St John's & Coolaney/Mullinabreena can’t be separated in Cleveragh

U-14 Div 3 Championship: St. John’s 3-9 Coolaney/Mullinabreena 4-6

Our U-14 team played Cooolaney/ Mullinabreena on Friday night last in Cleveragh in the first round of the Championship and served up a thrilling display of football to earn a well deserved draw on scoreline of 3-9 to 4-6.

Great performances from Luke Rogers in goal, Saul Molloy, Zaak Mahon, JJ McGowan and Ethan Scully in defence, Ryan Gorman and Marc McGowan were tireless at midfield, while forwards of Keelan Davey, Ben Miller, Dean Osbourne, Rory Martin and Jamie Kelly kept the game on a knife edge to the very end.
Well done on a great team performance.

St. John’s U-12 team bow out at semi-final stage

U-12 Fl Div 4 League Cup semi-final: St. John’s 0-15 St Molaise Gaels 0-32

St. John's ambitions of an underage title were dashed by a St. Molaise Gaels team that finished strongly in the U-12 league cup semi-final played in a sunny Monsignor Hynes Park on Tuesday evening.

St John’s under 12B team’s league position meant they qualified for the league semi-final against St Molaise Gaels.
A badly depleted St John’s team started the game strongly with good running from midfield from Liam lee and Cormac Roddy coupled with sterling defending of Ronan Hegarty and Mark Mc Donagh meant they went in at the end of the first quarter trailing by a point on a scoreline of 0.06 to 0.05.
The good work continued in the second quarter with good distribution by Goalkeeper Ciaran Quinn and great finishing by Mark Flohr ensured the team were still well in contention just trailing by 0.13 to 0.11.

The game changed in the third quarter with the team tiring and some strong running by St Molaise Gaels left St Johns on the back foot and they never really recovered from this spell of play and St Molaise Gaels went on to win by 0.32 to 0.15.

Best of luck to St Molaise Gaels in the final.

Best for St Johns on the night were Ciaran Quinn, Mark Flohr, John Hanbury and Ray Mc Carney.
Great credit is due to the team in their first year of structured leagues. They finished in the top three in the county at their age group and of the top four sides they were only defeated by St Molaise Gaels.

St. John's GAA & Cadra make presentation to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland

St. John's G.A.A. Club & Cadra presented a cheque of €1,000 to Emer Carty, Iris Murphy & Mary Dillon Cystic Fibrosis Ireland representatives

Pictured front row left to right:  Niall Gordon Joint Chairman St. John's G.A.A. Club, Emer Carty CF, Irish Murphy CF, Mary Dillon CF & Bridie McLean CADRA & St. John's G.A.A. Club.

Back row:  Pat Benson CADRA, Catherine Stenson CADRA, Dympna O' Loughlin CADRA, Mary Dunbar CADRA, Ray Henry Joint Chairman St. John's G.A.A. Club & Colm Nevin Insurance Officer St. John's G.A.A. Club

St. John's G.A.A. Club & CADRA help fund Cystic Fibrosis, writes Michael McGee.

Following the Monster Auction/Sale that was held in the Carrarow Community Centre on Sunday July 5th last a cheque was presented to Cystic Fibrosis representatives in Cuilbeg last evening.

Sligo’s own 'Adi Roche' Iris Murphy the hard working and driven member of the Sligo Cystic Fibrosis branch kindly gave me an insight into what Cystic Fibrosis is all about.

Following the presentation I asked Iris what is Cystic Fibrosis and what services is proved by the organisation?

“Cystic Fibrosis celebrated their 50th Anniversary last year. It focusses on the need of CF sufferers and their families and do a lot of lobbying and trying to get hospitals and services up to scratch the way they should be.

There is a big thing with CF where cross infection is a major worry for families and parents. So that is what the organisation is trying to do, to build isolated rooms not just for CF people obviously but to help the hospitals in general. CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the years and it’s all down to research, new medicines and better facilities.

There have been a huge amount of new developments. Last big one was Kalideco which worked on one particular gene. There is a few different genes. A new drug is coming out now and is at the negotiating stage. But hopefully it will benefit other people in the county that have a different gene. The 508 gene is the more common one.”

According to Iris the Sligo branch don’t receive any Government funding.

Not directly. Around the country there is hospitals that are given the centres of excellence and they try to build expertise with people who know a lot about CF. There are doctors and professionals in Sligo hospital and they will have a special interest in CF but they are not necessarily full time working with CF. So unfortunately Sligo is not a centre of excellence.
Galway is the nearest centre of excellence and at the moment a lot of people still go to Dublin which is a centre of excellence. Unfortunately in the West of Ireland the numbers are low which obviously means they can’t necessarily put any great funding behind which but it’s a pity because it does intend to mean people form the West of Ireland either have to travel further or maybe sometimes miss out on what is happening in the rest of the country.
It’s a big thing for the SIigo Branch to try and push to make sure the people in Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon. It’s actually the North West branch because if you think someone travelling from Letterkenny. Even going go Galway is a hell of a trek. If Sligo was the centre of excellence it would be better but unfortunately we don’t have the numbers for it.

How important is to get voluntary donations from clubs such as St. John’s G.A.A Club & Cadra

“Small clubs like St. John’s & Cadra are brilliant to support us. It’s a world wide illness but unfortunately the budget is so stretched with the HSE and the Government funding. They can only do so much. But its funding like this that goes towards research projects. We fund research projects as well and we give part of our money goes to medical and scientific council and they look into new things that are happening. Because of lobbying which still needs funds as well because of all the medical research. We don’t really know where the next big break through is going to come from maybe a small lab in Cork who knows. But those labs will only function with funding and resources coming from places like St. John’s.”

Final question I put to Iris What other events do CF organise over the year?

“The big one is the women’s mini marathon. The Garry Dillon event the (White Collar Boxing) are others. Usually it in an area where there is somebody well known and the locals are great for supporting and unfortunately in Gary’s case there is a lot of things done in his memory. It’s sad but it’s also nice that people are remembering him and are putting money towards prevention.

St. John's U-12 teams bow out in semi-finals

St. John's U-12 teams bow out in semi-finals

Both club U-12 teams involvement in the league ended at the semi-final stage. This is an achievement in itself having come through against quality opposition. Both teams and management deserve every praise for their commitment and skills shown throughout the league campaign.

The U-12 team Div 4 were averaging 15 points per game (no mean achievement) and it was ironic they again scored 0-15 last evening. It is a great starting position to build from and no doubt in the shorter term these bunch of young players will be bringing great honour to the club. They have all given us great enjoyment over the last number of months and enthralled us all with their exploits on the field of play.

Has to be said it was a successful league overall.

We done to both teams and management Brian Flynn & Justin McGoldrick U-12 Div 1 and Gerry Quinn & Michael Hegarty Div 4.

The Club would like to wish Shamrock Gaels & St. Molaise Gales the very best of luck in their respective finals.

The last day for Test Drives is now Thursday 23rd of July at 6pm.

Over the next few days we are cranking up the competition by launching online ways to earn extra points, this starts TOMORROW so it is crucial you keep an eye on our Facebook.

Tomorrow, to earn 1 extra club point, we are asking you to encourage people to post the following on their Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, etc, whichever they use).

They must post: “I’m supporting my club by Test Driving a 152 SKODA at Burns Car Sales. #DriveForSponsorship”

Please note, the hashtag #DriveForSponsorship is VERY important to allow me to track posts & award you points. Remember, any like on our page will also result in a point.

Rules: Use the hashtag & you have 24hours, starting from 9:30am tomorrow morning.

This is an easy way to earn points. It is a way for those who cannot come for test drive to show their support. Post on your club page for 1 point also.

Lastly, many of you haven’t responded with dates & times for us to bring a car to you. Get in touch & we’ll come to your club for 30 minutes.

St. John's players impress for Sligo hurlers

All-Ireland hurling U-21 C championships Quarter final

Sligo hurlers edge past Cavan in a cliffhanger

With all the attention drawn to the County’s Minor & Senior footballers contesting Connacht finals on Sunday 19th July the County’s U-21 hurlers have reached the All-Ireland Championships semi-finals all under the radar. Unknown to many of us the team are backboned by a number of talented club players most notably Darren McNeilis at full-back, Eoin Davey, Cathal Jordan Fr. Manning Cup medial winner in 2014 and current County senior player Mattew Davey who also captained the team.

The match was played before last Saturday’s All-Ireland football qualifier with Roscommon & Cavan in Breffni Kingspan Park. Trailing by seven points at half time the Sligo lads displayed great courage to come back from that deficit and forced the game into extra time. At the end of a nail biting contest Sligo did just enough to win by a point and earned their semi-final placing in a hard fought but enjoyable contest.

The All-Ireland semi-final will take place in Letterkenny on Saturday July 18th v Donegal

St. John's G.A.A Weekly Notes

St. John’s U-12 B team through to league semi-finals

St John’s U-12 B team finished off their league campaign with a hard earned victory on Tuesday evening against Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point in sunny Cleveragh.

Marc Lyttle again starred in goals and was ably supported by Ronan Hegarty, Sean Moore and Bendict Nwani forcing Drumcliffe/Rosses Point forwards to live of crumbs of possession.
Tireless running from the midfield pairing of Emmanuel Nwani & Cormac Roddy meant the forwards of the calibre of Ciaran Quinn, Aine Gorman & John Hanbury got a steady supply of ball to convert into scores.

Again the management team of Michael Hegarty & Gerry Quinn wisely used the full panel and had the luxury of bringing on talented players of Tyler Haxwell, Liam Lee, Corey O’Dowd, James Derwin & Ray McCarney all adding energy to the team.

An astute change from the team management seen Ciaran Quinn take over in goals and he kept a clean sheet while Marc Lyttle moved into attack and added extra metal and drive to the forward line. He was ably assisted by the impeccable finishing of Liam Lee in the last quarter keeping St. John’s well out in front. Ciaran Quinn let nothing past him in goals and the defence defended with dogged determination.

The team held on for an excellent win over a battling Drumcliffe/Rosses Point by 0-13 to 0-7.
Best for St Johns on the night were Ronan Hegarty, Sean Moore, and Benedict Nwani.

The team finished in third place and will now meet St. Molaise Gaels in the league semi-finals. It’s a repeat of their round six match on June 23rd last with St. Molaise Gaels winning narrowly by two points. Another close match is in prospect. The game is due to be played on 14th July next.

Great credit is due to the kids who have shown great commitment over the last eighteen months to their training and have worked hard to improve their skill levels. They are also a credit to their parents who themselves have supported the club and their children.

St. John’s Academy has secured Sponsorship from Quayside Shopping Centre. The formal sponsorship took place before last evening’s U-12 league game with Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Cleveragh. Quayside’s Marketing Manager Christine Dolan presented the Club’s Juvenile Chairman Fergal Kelly with the sponsorship alongside Joint U-12 Managers Michael Hegarty & Gerry Quinn.

Quayside is one of the largest Shopping Centres in the Northwest. With over 40 stores including TK Max, Next, Lifestyle Sports, Monsoon and has more than 300 employees.
Christine explained why Quayside got involved with the club this year.

“We wanted to do something local. We do a lot of sponsorship for local charities each year like the Northwest Hospice and wanted to do something in the local community. We put sponsorship aside each year and wanted to be involved with one of the local G.A.A. teams. Quayside Shopping Centre are very happy to support the St. John’s G.A.A. Club underage section.”

Juvenile Club Chairman Fergal Kelly described how the sponsorship came about.

“We approached the Quayside shopping centre earlier in the year. We made a suggestion to them as regards possible sponsorship. We spoke to Christine Dolan Marketing Manager in Quayside. And made a number of proposals to them. Thankfully they came on board with the underage section of the club. The U-12 group consists of two teams the older team of U-12’s are coached and managed by Brian Flynn & Justin McGoldrick while the younger U-11’s are coached by Gerry Quinn & Michael Hegarty."

Club Chairman delighted with the new sponsorship partners.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to see one of the top shopping centres in Sligo come on board with the G.A.A. Club. Like any G.A.A. Club fundraising is difficult. And to have a main sponsor in this section of the club is a fantastic addition. We are very grateful to Christine and to all the management in Quayside for their assistance.”
