St.John’s back to winning ways
St John’s senior team got their first win of the season when
they overcame the challenge of a gallant Bunninadden side by the narrowest of
margins in Sundays Division 1 league encounter played on the splendid Bunninadden
pitch. This was a ding-dong battle from the first whistle as both sides fought
for the vital league points which were at stake. Showing great heart and
determination the visitors came out on top with a point from an Ian Rossiter 45
in the dying moments proving to be the decisive score.
The home side were first on the scoreboard with points from
Kieran Gilligan and Shane Kerins before
Brian Harris opened the Saints account with a point. Vincent Frizzel had the
home side two up again within a minute before St John’s seized the initiative
with points from Rossiter , James Murphy and Harris put the visitors ahead. St
Johns goalkeeper Noel O’Donnell brilliantly saved a
Frizzel penalty before Fiachra Grennan, on his comeback game from injury,
pointed to extend the Saints lead. A pointed 45 from Frizzel left the half time
score 0- 4 to 0-5 in favour of St Johns.
The teams swopped points with Frizzel and Kerins for the home
side and Rossiter and Mark Rooney
replying for St Johns. With the scores at 0-6 to 0-7 Bunninadden suffered a
major blow when they had a player sent off but they rallied to level and then
regained the lead with two pointed frees from Joseph Rogers before Grennan and
Brian Mc Gowan pointed for the visitors to put them back in front briefly before
Niall O Donnell levelled matters again. As the play ebbed and flowed and with
the referee playing injury time Rossiter took the responsibility to slot over a
45 and give St Johns the win which gets them off the bottom rung of the league
table.
This was a great all round team performance from the Carraroe
boys in which they showed a much improved work rate and determination which
bodes well for the future if it is maintained. Every line on the team did well
and fought for every ball. A special
word of thanks to the loyal band of supporters who travelled out to the game
and hopefully went home happy. Next up

p.m.
