St.John’s edged out in Thriller

St. John’s  excellent comeback just fell short as they were edged out by a St. Michael’s side who just about deserved their victory  in a thriller on a score line of 3-11 to 3-10 played in St. Michael’s G.A.A ground on Sunday last, writes Michael McGee

St. Michael’s midfielder opened the scoring on 4 minutes with a 40m point on from Paul McTiernan. The home side played with the elements of a strong breeze behind them. St. Michael’s prospects were further enhanced when full forward Niall Clerkin gave St.John’s goalkeeper Fiachra Mooney no chance with a blistering shot low into the net leaving St. Michael’s 1-1 up after just 6 minutes of play. St. John’s influential midfielder  Mark Rooney opened St. John’s account after 10 minutes from a free 35 metres out.  On thirteen minutes St. Michael’s Paul McTiernan pointed a 13 metre free Alan Taaffe was causing the St.John’s defense  plenty of problems. St. Michael’s Paul Mc Tiernan again was on target with a brilliant score on the right after 19 minutes to put the home side 1-5 1-2 up.  St.John’s  fell futher behind 3 minutes later when St. Michael’s Cillian Harte’s well directed pass to the inrushing Niall Clerkin  shot into the empty net putting the homeside 2-5 to 1-2 ahead. St.John’s Niall Hayes & Mark Rooney reduced the lead with 2 well struck points.  But on 27 minutes St. John’s fell further behind when the lively full forward Cillian Harte slotted the ball under the advancing Fiachra Mooney in the St.John’s goal to put St.Michael’s 3-5 to 1-4 ahead. St. Michael’s centre half forward  Alan Taffee ended the scoring in the first half with a well executed point to leave St. Michael’s in the driving seat at half time by 3-6 to 1-4.

`
St.John’s management of Ray Henry & Niall Gordan had plenty to say at half time in the dressing room and the Carraroe side came out with more conviction in the second half.  Cillian Harte got the opening score for St. Michael’s.  John Reilly replied for St.John’s soon after.  St.John’s were forced into a substitution with Ray Henry Jnr coming in for the injured Geoff Corcoran 5 minutes into the second half.  On seven minutes Mark Rooney pointed from all of 45 meters out.  Alan Taaffe St. Michael’s & Mark Rooney both traded 2 points each to leave it 3-9 to 1-9. St.John’s full back Paul McLean got on the end of a well worked move to put over a well constructed point. The Carraroe side threw everything into attack and were rewarded with 2 goals within a minute.   Brian McGovern who had a great game throughout struck a shot on the volley from 21 meters out hitting an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net for an excellent strike. Sixty seconds later Enda McLoughlin was again picking the ball out of his net with Mark Rooney giving a man of the match performance struck in a goal mouth scramble to leave the sides level at 3-10 each after 27 minutes of play.  St. Michael’s Alan Taaffe got the winning score after an attempted fisted clearance from St. John’s goalkeeper came straight out to Taaffe the centre forward who made the no mistake when slotting over giving St. Michael’s the win in a thrilling finish. St. John’s will be left to rue a poor first half with the concession of 3 first half goals.
