St.Johns back to winning ways

St.Johns back to winning ways

St. John’s came out on the right side of an exciting one point victory over Eastern Harps on Saturday evening last, writes Michael McGee.

St. Johns had two narrow one points defeats in recent weeks outscored the Harps by 0-11 to 0-10. Eastern Harps were the first to score after 4 minutes even though the ball appeared well wide of Noel Hynes right hand post. It took St.John’s all of eleven minutes to register their first score. The Harps threatened to overrun the “Saints” early in the early stages of the first half and it took some magnificent last ditch defending to keep them out. Brian “Gooch”McGovern who is having a great season for the Sky Blues pointed for the Carraroe side following great work from James Noonan who broke up a promising  Eastern Harps move and quickly  turned defence into attack. Three minutes later St. John’s went ahead from an unlikely source.   Right Corner Forward John McNulty who prior to Saturday’s match had not scored in 3 years pointed over on the right wing from 22 metres out .  Another six minutes elapsed before St. John’s midfielder Mark Rooney pointed following good work from Brian McGowan. Rooney’s midfielder partner Mark Cunningham was going through a lot of hard work in the centre of the park. Alex Selby at corner back was also having a great game at this stage. The Pilkington Brothers Michael & Paddy both playing midfield for the Harps both got on the score sheet. Michael Pilkington pointed from all of 45 meters straight over the bar on 25 minutes. A minute later Paddy also got on the score sheet from 35 metres to send the teams in at 3 points each. Harps could have been further ahead but shot 7 wides in the first half when in good positions and which was to prove costly in the end.

At half time St. John’s management team of Ray Henry & Niall Gordon made some positional changes and brought in Andrew Valley to bolster the forward line. Brian McGowan pointed after just 30 seconds into the second half to put St.John’s in front. Three minutes later the St. John’s physically imposing centre half back Jamie Grehan burst through the heart of the Harps defence for an inspirational point from 26 metres. For the next 10 minutes the Harps took control with 4 points without reply. Shane O’Hara pointed a free for Eastern Harps to reduce the lead and this was quickly followed with another Eastern Harps pointed free from David Sheppard.  Paddy Pilkington kept his composure when drilled a great score from all of 35 metres over the bar and  then M.J. McDermott then put  the Harps one point ahead 0-7 0-6.  St. John’s Robert Galvin steadied the St. John’s ship with an excellent score. The attacking half back had a great game for the Carraroe side drew the sides level on 15 minutes. Mark Rooney pointed a 14 metre free but this was cancelled out by Shane O’ Hara. Harps Paddy Pilkington again scored another accurate long range point from all of 40 metres.  With 10 minutes remaining and St.John’s one point in arrears a leader in the form of Mark Rooney grabbed the game by scruff of the neck when he scored 3 points in as many minutes.   The big midfielder pointed a free from 28 metres out and quickly followed up with another point from 45 metres a minute later.  St.John’s kept up the pressure and with 5 minutes remaining that man Rooney again applied the finishing touches with a long range score that went high over the bar from 40 metres.  The Harps reduced the lead to the minimum on 26 minutes from their substitute. Brian “Gooch” McGovern playing more like a Jack O’Shea funnelled back on numerous times to help out the overstretched defence. The Carraroe side held out for a narrow victory. In an overall great team display the likes of Mark Rooney, Alex Selby, James Noonan, Robert Galvin, Brian McGowan & Jamie Grehan all excelled.

St.John’s:
Noel Hynes, Kieran Walsh, Rory Kearins, Alex Selby, Robert Galvin 0-1, Jamie Grehan 0-1,James Noonan, Mark Rooney 0-6, Mark Cunningham, Brian McGowan  0-2, Geoff Corcoran,  Andrew Kerr, David Heffernan, Gabriel Hynes, John McNulty 0-1. Subs Andrew Valley (half time), Dylan Healy (37 minutes).

St. Johns's win first league points of the season in Division 1

Results:  Senior FL Division 2
St. John’s 1-17 Ballymote 3-10

Late rally just fails again!!

There was mixed fortunes for our Div 1 and 2 teams over the weekend. Our Div 2 team entertained Ballymote in Stenson Park on Sat and despite a magnificent fight back in the second half lost out by 1 point on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-17. Slow to settle Ballymote took full advantage and had stretched into a 13 point lead by the break. A number of substitutions were made and the team produced a magnificent second half recovery led by Mark Rooney, Alex Selby and Brian McGowan. The introduction of Shane Stenson, Ross Gordon and Jamie McGovern paid dividends and with 2 minutes left the sides were level but Ballymote just stole it in the end with a late late point. The side showed great heart and fighting spirit and we look forward to the next game which is against Eastern Harps on this Sat.

Senior FL Division 1
St. John’s 1-11 Drumcliff/Rosses Point 2-5

Senior’s gain first league points

Our Div 1 team also had to do it the hard way against Drumcliffe/Rosses Point on Sun in Stenson Park. Leaving behind an abysmal first half performance the team got their act together in the final 20 min to earn a 1-11 to 2-5 victory. Whatever quiet words team manager Anthony Brennan said at half time seemed to have worked as the team upped the work rate and registered the necessary scores. However it was Drumcliffe who started the second half scoring with a fortunate goal from a cross that caught out defenders and goalkeeper and went into the net off the upright.
John Scanlon replied with a point to begin the fight back and further scores from Mark Rooney, Oisin Cox, and Conor Kearins who scored 1-2 brought the team back into contention. St Johns with the aid of the breeze took control in midfield in the final quarter with James Murphy and Shane Stenson winning enough possession to help secure victory.
Our next game is away to St Pats next weekend.

Minor Football League:
St.John’s 2-12 Coolera/Strandhill 0-4
St.John’s 5-11 Eastern Harps 1-06
Minors continue to impress

On Tuesday evening last, St. John’s Minor team defeated Coolera / Strandhill in Ransboro on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-4.  This was followed up on Thursday by a win against Eastern Harps in Keash on a scoreline of 5-11 to 1-06. This leaves us top of our group in the league and in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages. Well done to the panel on duty, which was Ryan Blake, Evan Tuffy, Cian Clancy, Alex Selby, Aaron Clerkin, Conor King, Paul McNamara, Conor Sweeney, Brian McGowan, Keelan Kelly, Cian Haugh, Gavin Sweeney, Cillian Gallagher, Malachy Spratt, Cathal Jordan, Cameron Keaney and Conor McGovern. Our next game is at home in Stenson Park against Drumcliffe / Rosses Point with a throw in time of 6.30pm on Thursday 24th April. All players should be in attendance at Cuilbeg at 5.45pm.
Congratulations to Summerhill College on winning the All Ireland Senior Schools final. A number of our Minor team were involved in this great success.
Well done to the County Sligo Minor team, which defeated Mayo in the final round of the Connacht Minor League. A number of the St. John’s Minor team are also on this panel.

Senior Football League Division 2:

St.Johns 3-10  St. Michael’s 3-11

St.John’s edged out in Thriller

St. John’s  excellent comeback just fell short as they were edged out by a St. Michael’s side who just about deserved their victory  in a thriller on a score line of 3-11 to 3-10 played in St. Michael’s G.A.A ground on Sunday last, writes Michael McGee

St. Michael’s midfielder opened the scoring on 4 minutes with a 40m point on from Paul McTiernan. The home side played with the elements of a strong breeze behind them. St. Michael’s prospects were further enhanced when full forward Niall Clerkin gave St.John’s goalkeeper Fiachra Mooney no chance with a blistering shot low into the net leaving St. Michael’s 1-1 up after just 6 minutes of play. St. John’s influential midfielder  Mark Rooney opened St. John’s account after 10 minutes from a free 35 metres out.  On thirteen minutes St. Michael’s Paul McTiernan pointed a 13 metre free Alan Taaffe was causing the St.John’s defense  plenty of problems. He further extended St. Michael’s lead with a well struck point from 30 meters out. St.John’s John’s Reilly struck for a well taken goal on 17 minutes. St. Michael’s Paul Mc Tiernan again was on target with a brilliant score on the right after 19 minutes to put the home side 1-5 1-2 up.  St.John’s  fell futher behind 3 minutes later when St. Michael’s Cillian Harte’s well directed pass to the inrushing Niall Clerkin  shot into the empty net putting the homeside 2-5 to 1-2 ahead. St.John’s Niall Hayes & Mark Rooney reduced the lead with 2 well struck points.  But on 27 minutes St. John’s fell further behind when the lively full forward Cillian Harte slotted the ball under the advancing Fiachra Mooney in the St.John’s goal to put St.Michael’s 3-5 to 1-4 ahead. St. Michael’s centre half forward  Alan Taffee ended the scoring in the first half with a well executed point to leave St. Michael’s in the driving seat at half time by 3-6 to 1-4.

St. John’s s spirited second half performance
`
St.John’s management of Ray Henry & Niall Gordan had plenty to say at half time in the dressing room and the Carraroe side came out with more conviction in the second half.  Cillian Harte got the opening score for St. Michael’s.  John Reilly replied for St.John’s soon after.  St.John’s were forced into a substitution with Ray Henry Jnr coming in for the injured Geoff Corcoran 5 minutes into the second half.  On seven minutes Mark Rooney pointed from all of 45 meters out.  Alan Taaffe St. Michael’s & Mark Rooney both traded 2 points each to leave it 3-9 to 1-9. St.John’s full back Paul McLean got on the end of a well worked move to put over a well constructed point. The Carraroe side threw everything into attack and were rewarded with 2 goals within a minute.   Brian McGovern who had a great game throughout struck a shot on the volley from 21 meters out hitting an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net for an excellent strike. Sixty seconds later Enda McLoughlin was again picking the ball out of his net with Mark Rooney giving a man of the match performance struck in a goal mouth scramble to leave the sides level at 3-10 each after 27 minutes of play.  St. Michael’s Alan Taaffe got the winning score after an attempted fisted clearance from St. John’s goalkeeper came straight out to Taaffe the centre forward who made the no mistake when slotting over giving St. Michael’s the win in a thrilling finish. St. John’s will be left to rue a poor first half with the concession of 3 first half goals.
St.Johns: Fiachra Mooney, Kieran Walsh, Paul McLean, Keeling Kelly, Shane Kilcawley,  Jamie Grehan, James Noonan, Mark Rooney(1-8) , Neal Hayes(0-1), Brian McGovern(1-0) John Reilly(1-1), Geoff Corcoran, Dylan Healy, Killian Harris, John McNulty,Sub Ray Henry Jnr  (35 minutes)
